Athlete of the Month: April 2018

Nick Mirabile

Quiet, determined, consistent, always willing to lend his time and help, Nick Mirabile is a model member of the Windy City community. He's the kind of guy who just comes in, gets his training done, and gets on with his day. An amazing functional fitness athlete in his own right, Nick can often be found on the gym floor encouraging and supporting other members of the Windy City community...pushing them to be the best they can possibly be, just as he does each and every week. We're proud to call Nick one of our own. Cheers to you Nick...you earned it!

Windy City April 2018 Athlete of the Month

“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take."
–Wayne Gretzky

How has training at Windy City helped you become the person you were meant to be?

Training at WCSC over the past eight months has helped me grow as an athlete and as a person. I immediately was drawn in by the amazing community of members and coaches. Every person was willing to introduce themselves and lend a hand. I never felt like the "new person.” I truly love the sport of CrossFit and how the methodology has changed my life. It is phenomenal to see how CrossFit has impacted so many others lives at WCSC. By feeling the support of the community of members at WCSC I feel that I have been able to grow as both an athlete and as a person.

Each day I walk in to train at WCSC I feel a sense of comfort. Knowing that no matter how I perform that day, I will always have a community of people around me who has my back and is ready to pick me up. This means everything to me, because this support has helped me push through some tough workouts. Recently, I have been competing in the CrossFit Open. During each workout a group of people will just surround me and give me that support and push that I need. This feeling is unlike any other and I believe this is what makes WCSC a special place to train.

What adventures, events, trips, races do you have planned?

Over the course of the next few months I have both a competition and a vacation planned. I will be competing in June in a local CrossFit competition on a team with some friends. I love the aspect of competition and putting my training to the test. Also, I will be taking a trip to Kenya, Africa in June. This is a trip I will be going on with my older brother, sister, her husband, and my girlfriend.

The trip to Africa is special because it is in honor of my godmother. A few years ago she passed away, and in her will she had requested that my brother, sister, and myself take a trip there to visit. She had visited when she was younger and the trip had such a profound impact on her life that she knew that it was something my brother, sister, and I must experience. I am truly looking forward to experiencing the amazing landscape and culture of this country. It will be the trip and experience of a lifetime.

What would you do and where would you go if time / money were not object?

If time and money where no object I would love to travel more. I would love to visit many countries and experience many different cultures. One in particular I would visit would be Italy. It has been a place I have always wanted to visit. I would start at the top of the country and backpack and travel all the way to the southern portion. I love the history of all the different cities and would be engulfed in the cutler and community.

Goals

  • Fitness: The goal for me is to always push myself to my full potential. I don't want to leave any questions unanswered when it comes to competing in the sport of CrossFit. Each year I compete in the CrossFit open, and the goal stays the same each year. And that is to do everything in my power to do the best I can.

  • Professionally: To make an impact on others lives. I currently teach physical education, and I want to positively impact each one of my students lives by showing them the importance of health and fitness. I think I can do this through teaching as well as by example.

  • Personal: To never think "what if.” To never leave questions unanswered. To give my best each day and spread happiness and positivity to others around me.

Something that most people don’t know about me:

Most people probably don't know how much I love to cook. I love creating and replicating new recipes. Growing up I always would help my mother in the kitchen by chopping vegetables or just giving her a hand. Over the years this led me to begin cooking on my own. Cooking is an art form and a way to express yourself. I love cooking for others and sharing a meal over a glass of wine.
