What's up Windy City!

February is here. Technically the shortest month of the year; psychologically, the longest. Not to worry though Windy City. We’ve got you covered. Lots to look forward to here in February. We’ve got the CrossFit Open on the horizon; begins February 23rd. Have you signed up and joined Team Windy City yet? As well, we’ve got a great new nutrition promo with our partner Nova3 Labs; a new Athlete of the Month profile that we’re really excited about; a new article detailing the Ruck Club’s experience at GORUCK Ascent this past summer; and towel service...YES, towel service!   • Towel Service
    Beginning sometime in the 2nd week of February, towel service will be available for those who chose to utilize the shower facilities at Windy City. This will be a free service provided by Windy City with new towels being delivered on a weekly basis. Towels will be available at the front desk, please see a coach or any front desk staff member to grab one. 

  • Nova3 Nutrition Promo
    Windy City is excited to announce an amazing promotional offer through our nutrition coaching partners Nova3 Labs!   • Windy City Athlete Accomplishments
    Coach Austin O'Neal finished 18th in a stacked field at The Wodapalooza; Mary Lee made it 32 miles at this year's Frozen Otter; and Ross Chapman finished the event, earning the coveted Otter dog tag for making it 64 miles in under 24 hours! A BIG congratulations to all three!

  • HIPBOX01
    Windy City will temporarily be home to the Happy Inside Project's HIPBOX01, a fun, interactive art piece that helps spark a healthy conversation among communities. It's the result of a collaboration between Shannon Favia and Paul Tebben. Shannon is the artist behind the Windy City sneaker paintings and Paul is the architect behind the Windy City facility.

    How it works:
    1.  Read the question on the box.
    2.  Grab a piece of chalk and write your thoughts/answer on the gray walls. Through this writing, YOU are now part of the art.
    3.  Complete the interaction with the HIPBOX by stepping inside the bright yellow, fuzzy interior & take a pic (make sure the led lights are turned on inside so you can shine like the rock star you are)!
    4.  Post and share the coolness with your friends by tagging @windycitycrossfit @thehappyinsideproject #HIPBox #liveBIG.

  • CrossFit Open: Feb. 23 – Mar. 27
    It's time to see your O-PEN face! What's the CrossFit Open? It's a five-week stretch from Feb. 23 – Mar. 27, in which you do one workout a week. These workouts are awesome because they're so varied and anyone at any skill level can complete them. Each workout gets released on Thursday nights and we will be doing the workouts as a gym the following Saturdays. Those who have been members in the past know that it's an awesome atmosphere here at Windy City on Saturdays with scheduled heats, cheering, and just leaving it all out there on the gym floor. It's a great opportunity to get in a great workout, test your fitness, and just have some fun with the entire CrossFit/Windy City community. We encourage everyone to sign up for the Open, and be sure to select Windy City CrossFit as your affiliate/team. Last year we had 101 members register. Let's get 120+ in 2017!

  • Olympic Weightlifting Seminar: May 20 – 21
    Windy City is extremely excited to be hosting the 2012 Olympic 105kg champion, Aleksey Torokhtiy and his coach Sergei Putsov (Exercise Science Ph.D), for a weekend weightlifting seminar this May. The seminar will include theory lecture, video biomechanics and technique explanation, drills, training, and personal recommendations and advice to all participants according to the individual needs. That's 16 hours of instruction!

    Where: Windy City Strength and Conditioning 
    When: May 20–21, 2017
    – Saturday Noon–8pm
    – Sunday 9am–5pm
    Cost: $500

  • Yoga Sundays at 10am
    If you haven't yet, check out Danielle's 60 min restorative yoga session in the back room (10am Sundays). Bring your own yoga mat. We estimate space for about 15 people so be sure to come a bit early if you want to check out her class. This is a free class to all Windy City members. Let's get flexible.

FAVE FIVE FROM THE COACHES

Here's a list of what we're loving and learning this month:

  1. Eloise: Practice I'm currently trying
    Spending time off of social media for the past few weeks has enhanced my life. Clearing my mind of unnecessary stimulus left me with time to nurture more authentic relationships and interactions with individuals I value. It has also made me more mindful of how I spend my time. If you want to try it, cold turkey is the best option. 
  2. Justin: Morning practice I'm currently digging
    Inspired by the Ice Man (Wim Hof) and his cold shower challenge, I've been finishing each shower with up to 30 secs of cold water. Why? I'm not sure. I guess because I came across it, really hate being cold and wanted to attack a weakness. Goal is to push this up to 60 sec over the course of the next 4-6 weeks. I do feel refreshed and ready to go after those 30 sec though!
  3. Ox: Favorite app right now
    WaterMinder—an app that tracks your water intake and reminds you when you should drink up!
  4. Tony: Book I'm reading
    The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks—Learn how to change your mindset and unlock potential in all aspects of life, workouts included! 
  5. Sheena: Amazon purchase I'm loving
    Sleep Master Sleep Mask—I love sleeping in total darkness (think Batman cave) and this is mask does the trick!

Windy City Ruck Club Does GORUCK Ascent: Mountain Navigation and Survival Training

“What really drew me to Ascent was the promise of learning some outdoor survival skills. I’ve always wanted to have these skills, but was never a Boy Scout, never spent a ton of time in the outdoors, camping, etc. Also, just being with the group (Ruck Club). We’ve got a great crew, and I was excited to experience this trip with all of them....”
